Connect and Links Series 2001-2004

oil on wood panels, mounted to wood

These wood paintings are made up of grids of separately painted small panels. This work arose out of my own experience of motherhood speaking to the sustenance of new life and was inspired by the miraculous feat of cell division into the journey of creation and birth of new life. As the panels are painted separately and then placed together, and often worked further, there are both connections and disconnections between the panels.  The viewer may experience the distinct individual parts (which are readily apparent as separate entities) and the whole at once.  The small singular elements of the multi-paneled pieces are meant to exist in equal strength to the whole.  In effect, nothing is disconnected from the whole. The individual cannot exist without the support of the whole; but, nevertheless, it remains distinctly unique.
