Phylum Series 2008-2013

Works on paper: mixed media on paper, mounted onto paper

A phylum is a taxonomic primary subdivision that groups together organisms that have the same body plan. As in nature, the micro world is the elemental building blocks of the macro world. In this series, I was playing with some traditions of landscape- primarily the horizon or the relationship between the earth and the sky, but also, in some cases, the greens of leaves and grass. On the other hand, I pondered our desire to control and name nature. Hence, the title Phylum and the irregular grid from which things seem to “grow”.
